Master's degree in Mathematics


Modern Industry and Research are requiring ever greater Mathematical skills. This Master’s Degree, as is the case for all the best programmes, is entirely in English. Many classes will be given by external professors coming from our partner institutions, among the best ranked in Europe. There are two options: the first is to follow the programme in Applications, which is designed to prepare the student for a professional career, based on a providing a strong background in Modelling and Numerical Methods in the fields of Industrial Mathematics, Applied Sciences, Data Science, Decision Science, Financial Mathematics and Cryptography. Alternatively one may follow the Teacher Preparation Programme. Individual programmes may be personalized by taking courses at the University of Trento, with which we have a convention, or by taking part in the international exchange programs Erasmus+, Worldwide Study and Erasmus+ for Traineeship. Our Master’s Degree is a teaching centre for the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI). Indeed, by choosing the appropriate courses it is possible to get the “ECMI Certificate” upon graduation. It is also possible to have an Internship at important national and international Banks and  Insurance Companies, as well as in Research laboratories and Schools. These aspects of the Degree give graduates a competitive edge for their future careers, be it in the Job Market, or for a continuing Academic career.
Studies by Alma Laurea and other international institutions show that there is a strong demand for Applied Mathematicians with a good background in Probability, Modelling and Computations and these are highly sought after, both in Europe and elsewhere.
A graduate of the Master’s Degree in Mathematics at the University of Verona will be well prepared for employment in Banks, other Financial Institutions and Insurance Companies, as well as in the Research and Development Offices of companies and other public and private Institutions (data analysis, software development, cryptography and information security, analysis and modelling of biomedical processes, methodologies and technology for Industry 4.0 …) at both the national and international level.
The graduate will be able to successfully continue in a Doctoral Programme in Mathematics, or, with the appropriate choice of courses, in Computer Science, Statistics, Economics and Finance, Bioengineering and Biomedical Sciences, either in Italy or abroad. Alternatively, the graduate may decide to complete their Teacher Training by following the appropriate government licensing procedures.

Degree programme annual factsheet (SUA-CdS)

As part of the Quality Assurance system, complete, updated and easily available information on objectives, study plan, resources used and results achieved for each degree programme is made available through the SUA-CdS - Scheda Unica Annuale del Corso di Studio (Degree programme annual factsheet). This includes an Overview and three public sections (Learning Objectives, Student Experience, Learning Outcomes) which together provide a wide range of information about each degree programme. The SUA-CdS also contains an administrative section (Administration and Quality Management) that is for internal use only.

The Degree programme annual factsheet (SUA-CdS), which is currently available only in Italian, is a valuable tool that can be used by the University to design, implement and reorganise, as well as to evaluate, each degree programme. However, the SUA-CdS factsheet is also useful for students, to help them choose the right programme of study.

Learning outcomes
The purpose of the Master’s degree in Mathematics, in line with the main goals of the LM-40 degree class, is to provide students with a solid mathematical background. Being taught entirely in English, this programme is suitable for both Italian and international students.

The programme is organised into two curricula (the ‘Education’ curriculum and the ‘Applied’ curriculum), the first of which focuses on foundational issues and the training of secondary school teachers, and the latter on those areas of mathematics that are most involved in the contemporary development of applied mathematics, and that offer the best career prospects for graduates.
The programme provides students with a solid background in the fundamentals of mathematics and the necessary knowledge for advanced applications of algebra, geometry, analysis, stochastic analysis, mathematical physics and numerical analysis.

The programme includes a core of traditional modules, in which problem solving plays an important role. Depending on the chosen curriculum, these core modules are then complemented by a series of modules on specific topics of major trends in international research. The ‘education’ curriculum focuses on the teaching of mathematics, computer science and modern physics at the theoretical level and on laboratory teaching experiences, without neglecting educational psychology.

The 'applied' curriculum offers advanced theoretical modules (e.g. algebra and mathematical analysis) as well as professional training in the fields of mathematical finance, modelling of physical and biological phenomena, analysis and processing of data and images, with a focus on the computational methods associated with the various fields.

Students can complete their education and improve their professional skills by choosing from a wide range of internships at schools and companies, as well as at universities and laboratories in Italy, and exchange opportunities at recognised partner institutions abroad.

Moreover, although this programme is intended as a natural continuation of the L-35 degree class, it is structured in such a way as to make it accessible and useful for those who, coming from related degrees, wish to develop their studies with a focus on the mathematical aspects underlying the applied sciences.

Students’ knowledge is normally assessed through written and/or oral exams. Depending on the case, these exams may be partially replaced and/or supplemented by other forms of assessment such as homework, project reports, internships, presentations as part of seminars.

Career prospects
This programme trains students to become Mathematicians, Financial analysts, Statisticians, Software analysts and designers, System analysts.

Master's graduates in Mathematics are expected to be able to adapt readily to a variety of working environments thanks to their strong theoretical, modelling and numerical skills. They are also expected to be able to adapt to new situations and problems, and quickly and independently gain new specialist knowledge.
Master’s graduates will be able to successfully continue their studies at PhD level in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics and Economics, in Italy and abroad, or to complete their training through professional teacher training courses for secondary school teachers. As shown by recent studies and by the results of the AlmaLaurea survey, applied mathematicians with a solid probabilistic-modelling-computational background are highly sought after in the labour market at European and international level.
Graduates with a Master's degree in Mathematics in Verona can successfully work in teams at financial and banking institutions or insurance companies, as well as in the research and development sectors of companies and industries (software analysis and development, cryptography and security, service companies for virtual experimentation, scientific laboratories of public and private institutions, model development and analysis of biomedical processes, etc.) at regional, national and international level.
Graduates are also able to carry out their technical or professional tasks either independently or in teams with experts from other scientific disciplines, providing in particular modelling and computational support.
