In this work, we review some mathematical models used to describe the spread of epidemics. A particular relevance is given to the stochastic version of these models, represented as a discrete-
time Markov chain and as a system of stochastic differential equations, providing examples of trajectories and a study of the expected duration of an epidemic, as a result of numerical simulations.
Some possible extensions are briefly introduced in the final section.
